Here is a glowing review of local comrade Robin Stocks’ new book about volunteers from the Manchester area who went to Dublin to support the Easter Rising in 1916. ‘Hidden Heroes of Easter Week’ is a great example of radical family history – of how tracing one’s ancestors can lead to the uncovery of stories of historical events from a little known angle. It shows there is nothing parochial about family or local history, which can often throw new light on important historical events. As a major challenge to British Imperialism during the First World War, the Easter Rebellion had reverberations which can still be felt today.
